My car recently developed an annoying creaking noise in the driver’s front corner. My mechanic had a theory it might be the heim joints on my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I probably should have gotten the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but the Ground Control ones are spiffy red anodized aluminum, and we all know red anodized aluminum suspension parts give you +5 hp.

These:

Are way cooler than these:

But these:

Make the un-cool looking ones much less likely to develop annoying noises like my racecar red ones did.

Last night I got sick of the damn noise so I bought a can of WD-40 Specialist Water Resistant Lubricant, took the driver side front wheel off, and sprayed a shitload of the stuff all over the heim joints and the threads where they screw into the turnbuckle. I took the car up and down a couple driveways in my neighborhood, as this is the type of driving where the creaking noise was loudest, and the creaking is gone! Woohoo! That was probably the easiest fix of a super annoying-ass noise I’ve ever done.

I’ll probably do the passenger side in the near future as a preventative step but hey at least I know there’s nothing seriously wrong and it’s just my heims needed some lube.

That sounds dirty.

I just used the same one to get my door check arm to stop making a horrifying noise. I'm sure there was a better lubricant for the job, but I only had that (for my antenna) and WD40, and I know the latter loves collecting dirt, so it seemed like the saner choice.

Also: motorcycle chain lube works great.

Yeah I had seen about that but I figured this stuff might hold up to weather a bit better.

The lack of a dust boot has always made me nervous about buying these kind of joints, especially since my road isn’t paved. Do parts like this recommend a specific lubricant and maintenance schedule?

On my rear sway bar I have Hotchkis end links with a ball joint on one end and an exposed heim joint on the other, but the heim joint is an open end where the bolt goes all the way thru and a nut rests on the other side. I was able to find boots that fit over them, but those boots don’t work on the Ground Control front links with the bolt integrated into the rod end.

Ground Control suggested that motorcycle chain lube or water-resistant silicone like I used would both be fine. Also they said while the joints might develop noise over time and need lubing, they’repretty tough to actually damage.

Depending on your car and how many different companies make parts for them, you could be able to locate the particular suspension thingies you need that don’t necessarily come with heim joints.
